Andy Zalkin was born in 1992 in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York. Born to Nicaraguan and Russian-Ukrainian parents, Zalkin’s work is largely influenced by intergenerational stories and family archives.
Zalkin’s work explores the boundaries between cultural objects, self expression, and historical preservation. A major focus of her current practice is the professional archiving of familial photographs, objects and documents from Nicaragua and Eastern Europe, some of which have belonged to her family for generations. Working closely with family in the U.S. and Central America, her images examine places that hold memory for many generations, preserving and honoring them for her family members fractured by migration and the passing of time.
Zalkin graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York in 2020 with a BFA in Photography and Related Media & a Minor in Art History.
